Q4: Alkanes, more features of molecules, bpt order, IMF’s 10 marks

At this stage we can note that half the total number of marks are avaialbe for very unchallenging questions. You need to maximise scoring on these Q’s in order to copw with any mark losses on the harder, more tricky questions.

Q5: Chemical reaction pathway 8 marks
Q6: carbonyl related interconversaions and tests and experiments done in the lab sessions plus sketching amines 15 marks
Q7: Chemical reactions (functional group conversions) 8 marks
Q8: Benzene related reactions 9 marks

Q3: “Aspects/Features” of molecules, identifying functional groups  chiral centres(!) hybridization, demonstrating H-bonding IMF’s 12 marks
Q4: Chemical reactions of various functional groups.12 marks

Again note that almost half the total number of marks are available for very unchallenging questions. You need to maximise scoring on these Q’s in order to cope with any mark losses on the harder, more tricky questions.

Q5: Identifying the type/named reactions (e.g. “Nucleophilic Addition” type of reactions). 3 marks
Q6: Identifying/sketching amines, explanation of different basicities, reaction with NaNO2 + HCl at icebath conditions. 11 marks
Q7: Carbonyl chemistry – reaction with cyanide and MECHANISM! 9 marks.
Q8: Reaction pathway scheme, reactions of various functional groups and chemical tests (i.e. strongly related to lab work) to distinguish different functional group 13 marks

Q1: Structures from given names: 12 marks
Q2: Given a molecule (alkane) asked to identify chiral centres(!), molcular and empirical formula, combustion equation, hybridization: 10 marks
Q3: Put names to molecular structures given 12 marks
Q4: Reactions of alkenes and other functional group interconversions (alkenes/haloalkanes/carbonyls/alcohols) and chemical tests on those those groups.: 10 marks

Once more, like the two more recent (2013) past years papers, the questions have been quite ‘shallow’ – i.e. no ‘deep’ explanations needed to explain these things. Their should be no problem with getting FULL (or almost full) marks up to this stage.

Q5: Which molecule is most acidic  – EXPLANATION required. Hydrolysis chem equation, Reaction of an acid chloride (specifically ethanoyl chloride) in making an ester and an amide.: 10 marks
Q6: Six chemical reactions/functional group interconversions of various (non-related molecules): 12 marks
Q7: Multi-step reaction scheme alcohol->ester, alcohol->alkene, alkene->alkane, alkane->chloroalkane, Friedel Crafts alkylation: 14 marks

Nothing too difficult, almost no explain type questions (the ones students find hardest/worst to answer)

Q1: Deduce names from given structures: 8 marks
Q2: Sketch structures having been given names: 12 marks
Q3: A molecule is presented Have to identify features of that molecule, e.g. polar groups present, chiral centres(!), hybridization present, ID the pi bonds, which functional group on the molecule can react with an alcohol and sketch the product.: 12 marks

32 marks out of 80 so far for simple and ‘easy to get the mark scoring answers quickly’ type Q’s

Q4: Chemical tests to distinguish two different ketones from each other and more tests to distinguish two different alcohols from each other
EXPLAIN which compounds (alcohols and an alkene) can undergo oxidation with hot acidified KMnO4 solution: 14 marks
Q5: Simple chemical pathway. Alcohol subjected to oxidative conditions, the product reacted with 2,4-DNPH (Brady’s reagent).
Simply chemical functional group interconversion(reactions): 14 marks
Q6: This seems like the hardest question on the paper: (but actually it’s just because molecular names are given and not structures. If you drew the structures from the names given, it will be like all the other past years papers questions based on gonverting functional groups. Give reaction steps for various reactions from a common reactant : 11 marks
Q7: Benzene chemistry question, ID the nucleophile and electrophile, reason for FeCl3, Friedel crafts acylation and alkalytion: 9 marks
