Zereda… U4 Kinteics WILL be in the exams! You should read up on Kinetics. How many lectures did you have on it last year? The good(?) thing is Uni 4 will be multiple choice questions only

Please note that the unit 4  paper for this examination will be  only a multiple choice paper.The paper will consit of 20 MCQ questions  and the duration of the exam will be 25 minutes . These changes are made due to change in exam date of unit 4 paper.

The  mark distribution for this exam will be will be

Test 1                  10%
Test 2                 10%
 Unit 3 & 6        10% (combined paper)
Unit 4                 20%
Unit 5                 50%

Students:  Unit 3&6 paper (written practical- 1 hour) will be on monday  2nd November at old library at 4 pm.

Please don’t think that just because U4 is MCQ that it will be easy. But of course U5 is the most important carrying 50%.

I usually plan to deliberately and selectively leave one or two things out from the material I teach, so you are forced to consult the specification (to make you familiar with it) check your notes, read your books/research the sub-topic yourself and make some short notes.

How nice of me to force you to do this

 Sometimes I find the (new)specification is very patchy as to what you need to cover. I get the impression the designers of the specification made a draught and then either had an idea as to what else to put in there or were forced to do so by QCA – the Qualifications and the Curriculum Agency – the ‘big fish’ in setting educational standards to which the exam boards, like Edexcel, must conform to. Even if my guess is incorrect, the specification nonetheless is much more patchy than the last one, and to me it’s annoying. It’s difficult to teach in a linear/progressive fashion. Even the books reflect the patchy nature, giving say, a short paragraph on one of the ’spot ideas’ appearing in the specification, \in order to ‘plug the gaps’.

 Because of this (and a few other reasons) in most cases, I have deliberately not missed out these ‘patchy’, somewhat specific things, and in the case of this organic unit, Unit 5.4, I will produce a document addressing these patchy things, once again to ‘tidy up’ the material needed to be covered for this unit. The document will appear here eventually, note the material already covered, actual reactions are the ‘core’ of this topic so don’t panic!

The first extra class was not representitive of what I want these extra classes to be. It was more like a ‘pre-test emergency’ class just to give you a bit more espoxure to redox and transition element chem before the test, and I was urgently called away {I have been too busy to be able to type out and post the answers to the ‘Lett’s Q’ yet. Sorry about that, but u got answer to other Q’s}

Tomorrow however, it should be representitive of extra class from now on.

In these extra classes you are expected to have reviewed the topic in  advance and bring your queries to the class whereupon I will try and solve any difficulties you may be having. Bring also questions from tutorials/topic tests/books that have caused you problems in the past.

Remember use the specification to targt the areas you are weak in.

Finally, a gap in the use of the photocopier!

I’ve made a copy of the answers 4 u. I’ve left a copy of the answers in your rooms. I you’ll have to refund me the cost of printing. It cost me about 20 cen per copy. The REDOX ones were rather rushed I’m afraid, hopefully there arn’t any errors.(?)

Speaking of photostats, I haven’t forgotten that some of you wanted a copy of the book order from Amazon. Pleae wait a bit longer. Photocopying is a nightmare these days.

And speaking of errors, in the SUPPLEMENTAL BOOK, I noticed I mistyped the Cu2+(aq) +e-  –> Cu+(aq)  equation. I wrote Cu+ on both sides. Please correct it. You can check it against the reduction potentials in the data book if you’re not sure what I mean.

Here is the supplemental document:  Unit 5.3 supplemental 29th Sept 09  containing one or two bits to ‘tidy up’ the learning requirements for topic 5.3. Don’t forget to read up on fuel cells and/or look at/remember what you did in your posters about fuel cells. You can get the main topic 5.3 docs here.

This specification/syllabus has quite a bit more ‘application’ to it than the previous specification. Good if you’re training to become a chemist, but still interesting if you aren’t {I have to say that :p}

P.S.  9M3. The lab technicians had to cancel this Fridays lab, due to essential prep work needed for next weeks labs (juniors too!) and lack of available rooms. This means you are unlikely to be able to do the relevant practical’s before the theory test on Wed. Fear not! You WILL do the pracs before the end of sem exams.

Talking of the ever popular Friday slot, it might well be the one I’m going to use for my invitation to the following for extra class.

Important:

Your topic test 2, covering topic 5.3 ONLY, will be on 7th October, 4:00pm in your respective classrooms.

You must bring your data book. If you don’t have a data book then fear not, I’ll be giving one to the 9M3, 9M8 and 9M10 reps during this week. The reps must make sure their respective students get a copy BEFORE the weekend!

If you forget the book then you will NOT be able to answer at least one question. In your FINAL May/June 2010 exams, you will be expected to use the data book, which will be given to you. The data book is for units 4 and 5 and 6 only.

Under NO circunstances are you allowed to have ANYTHING (other than a name in English letters) in whatever language, written on those databooks. If I see ANY writing on then you will get ZERO. Even if it says “I love nasi lemak !!“. Yes I know, it’s painful but it’s a must! You have been warned.

I’m still editiing the Unit 5.3 documents, one for redox, the other for transition metals. It should be up here within a day or so – Monday at the latest (I hope). Watch this space!  The unit 5.3 topic test will be on the 2nd week back, and specifically on 7th Oct (Wed) if we can book the hall, otherwise it will be in class hours, the first class on the 2nd week back.

9M3: It would be a good idea to do the practical involving transition metals. You didn’t get to do it due to a public holiday on 7th Sept. I think C204 is free on thursday afternoon. Are you free then?

UPDATE: I’vejust head from Shanti. From what said it’s up to me when I want to give the test. I will give it on the FIRST class of the week. 9m2, 9m3, 9m8 on Tuesday in class hours. 9m10 wednesday.

Actually the organic worksheet is a little bit too simple. Please read each learning requirement point on the the syllabus (or ’specification’ as we are supposed to call it these days!  *rolls eyes* nothing is can be left untouched these days, everything has to be ‘repackaged’ *slaps self and stops moaning*).

Do the Q’s in your books and practive mechanisms.
