Brought to you by the Malaysian Social Research Institute (MSRI) http://www.msri.org.my Note: This news is so new that MSRI website admins haven’t yet replaced their notifiation of the previous (Dec 2009) Film festival with news of this latest (Dec 2010) one!

I was lucky to attend some of the films last year. They were great :)

I advise everyone to go along. Learn something real, something about real people, real suffering, real need for help and support, real life, instead of all this Hollywood kinda trash.

Nice game: http://www.planetdan.net/pics/misc/georgerag.swf

This blog isn’t for politics, but I will always make one exception: for the Palestinian people.

Palestine dove

We, with our relatively luxurious lives, cannot comprehend the sheer horror most Palestinians are forced to bear for most of their tear filled lives. As a human being, I simply cannot accept the crushing oppression lashed out upon them. Hence I will use this single post to continually display events organised to help the desparate plight of the Palestinian people.

Thanks be to God, Malaysia has a very active group of Medical Doctors, Care Workers, Health care, Social care, Lecturers and many, many other Professionals, including simple and consciencious individuals doing whatever they can.

You too can help! Get involved, go along, join the boycotts, show support or even just help spread the word. Everything counts! Really, it does!

May God bless you.

EVENT (bulletin) 5: Multimedia Palestine presentation challenge.

Posted by: intechemistry on: Feb 11 2010

UPDATE: I have made the soundtrack and have planned the accompanying sections and visuals, and have a helper to assist in the production of the presentation. Thanks to all for your interest. When it’s ready I think I’ll post it here. The soundtrack took ages to edit, but the result is absolutely fantastic.

This post is not related to academic matters, but to the issue of Palestine and really, it’s aimed at the Juniors: ALM10, ALG13 and ALED7 (as well as any ATU/AUSMAT) students, however if the senior year students wish to do it – ONLY IF IT WILL NOT INTERFERE WITH THEIR PREPARATION FOR THE TRIAL EXAMS AND FINAL EXAMS – then they are welcome. Likewise, if junior students want to do it they should only commit if it will not interfere with their studies.

Actually the challenge is open to anyone, but it’s mostly students that come here, hence my specific mention of them.

Task: To prepare 2 multimedia presentations (flash or whatever popular/common format) about the Palestine issue and supporting artwork (An A2 poster, which can also be printed in A4 size with no problems. It is for the Viva Palestina Malaysia’s official Launching on March 3rd). You can go to the main Viva Palestina website to get a flavour of VP artwork if you wish. The presentations will be shown to local MP’s, foreign MP’s and ambassadors (and maybe ex-PM’s like Dr Mahathir)

Presentation 1) should be a between 10-12 minutes long.
Presentation 2) should be between 5-7 minutes long.

The longer presentation can use elements of the shorter presentation if desired.

I have a large archive of documentaries etc which can be used if necessary.

The presentations should focus on the injustices and crimes suffered by the Palestinians including the theft of their land as well as giving some kind of reference to the horrific attacks they have suffered. Anti-Jewish content is definitely NOT wanted, however anti-Zionist content is welcomed. You will therefore need to understand the difference. (I plan to give a presentation to students on Zionism and it’s history in the near future).

It should be as creative as possible but not too weird/arty as there is a message to get across here.  Be prepared to show me the work and (worst case scenario) for me to tell you to change most of it – should it not be suitable. I will need to see a draught copy at least 10 days before 3rd March.

There should also be mention of the companies Viva Palestina Malaysia has a current campaign calling for a consumer boycott thereof. Products and Companies = Nestle, L’Oreal, Coca-Cola and McDonalds. If you go to the COMPLETE Malaysia website you can get more details on this. http://completemalaysia.com/ {Note website was down early morning of 14th Jan 2010}.

Remember if you want to do this, you must make sure it does not cause a problem for your studies. I.E. You should think about how much leisure time you have.

What will you get out of it? first and foremost you will get what ever comes out of doing good deeds. Secondly your work will be shown to respected dignitaries, thirdly a fee for doing it. Your fee (which I will pay you) will be RM 500. You may work as an individual or as a group. I will accept the fee from a maximum of two groups (each group must fulfil the requirements above and produce word independent of one another)

Salam..
Great!
25th July: some sort of a charity concert?

Salam AkMaR.
It’s not a concert, more a ummm….. actually I’m not too sure what exactly it incolves. I’ll ask someone involved with it and let u know more later. Damn! HP got no credit. Time to Jalan kepada kedai (if they have any credit this time!).

there’s probably a few stalls selling things like food and books and DVD’s, may clothers and other stuff. Maybe like a tombola??

Ok. setting off for the shop now…

OK. Shop had RM10 voucher. My friend a bit bz now, but she will e-mail me details of what they will have later.

Knowing my friend, I guess they may have some presentations too and almost definately info about orphan programs etc.

I think i’ll go for it.
Parents having course that weekend.
Time to bring my siblings out for fun.
Haha…

Great news AkMaR :) Thanks for the show of support. I am surprised that the new ALM’ians are soooooo silent on this issue.

Come on ALM9′ians (and 10′ians and ALG12/13′ians, AUSMAT’ians, ADFP’ians) just because the frequency of the bombing has lessened doesn’t mean the situation is any better.

At this part of your studies boleh ‘main main’ kan?

And being able to meet the legendary AkMaR should also be an incentive ;) heh heh heh.

Legendary?
Too good to be true… :-P

legendary to me! :D

It is quite interesting, that everyone is slamming Israel, but no one is hitting the Hamas administration at all. Not that Israel has clean hands, but I would imagine that Hamas is one of the main reasons that Gazans get bombed and slaughtered by Israelis over and over again. After all, they’re the ones organizing Qassam squib fireworks rocket raids, suicide bombings, etc. Obviously, the Israeli govt cannot look weak, and they’re Jews, so they follow “an eye for and eye, a tooth for tooth”, so they respond. Causality. Newton’s 3rd law. Simple as that. The other half of Palestine (Fatah) on the other hand, is in relative peace. I dunno, I don’t claim to know everything about the Palestinian issue, but that’s what I can see thus far. So…yeah. Sorry if this agitates or upsets anyone. Why can’t we all just kiss and make up? Right? :-D

Whoops!! Typo!! “An eye for an eye…”

Jonathan

Well, imagine the state govt where u’re staying now gave a permission to some total strangers to stay in ur room and kicked u out of it.

What will u feel?

That’s not all.
These total strangers start going into ur sister’s room, ur parents’ room, ur brother’s room.
Then he started racking off ur kitchen.
He emptied ur refrigerator, killed ur pet fish, annoy ur sister, and took your mother’s money, then crashed ur laptop onto the floor.

U cant call the cops.
The state govt gave them the permission.

Then, ur brother started to kick him, cursing him, and tried to punch him as hard as he could but of course, ur brother cant do much, the strangers are very muscular.

The strangers then accused ur brother of violating the law, trying to hurt them, and saying that ur brother is terrorizing.

Now, they bring in riffles, machine guns, and samurai sword enhanced with jedi power to keep u guys quiet.

And ur maid, do not want to get herself fired, and she’s planning to send her resume to the strangers if they finally managed to drive ur whole family out of the hse, is trying to negotiate with the strangers; the one who brought the weapons in.

Well…
Let’s change the character.

The state govt = US UK
The strangers = Israel
U brother = HAMAS
Maid = FATAH

And the harrassment, attacks, oppressions by the strangers are amplified millions time.

How would this story now turns into?
Who’s actually attacking, and who’s depending?

But of course, please, with all due respect, i wasnt really meaning ur bro or ur maid or ur family when i typed it.
It was an analogy.
Something like what Dr House would do, giving analogies.
p/s: I spent most of my day watching House this last week of my hols. :-P

Sorry, typo…
It’s “defending” not “depending”.
And i’m not trying to copy jonathan here…
Honestly..

#8 Jonathan Chua

Hi Jonathan. I am very happy you have written your thoughts on the matter, and I fully welcome your comments.

First off, ‘Israel’ is the clear instigator, propagator of death and suffering in the holy land, and that shameful title isn’t a close contest, it’s by a massive margin.

That alone is justification to focus on ‘Israel’ crimes and gives authority to any and all who oppose it.

Over the last 6 months, I have given 4 presentations to academics, professionals , members of NGO’s and students about the history of ‘Israel’ and its Zionist foundations; I have done a lot of research in this area.

Unfortunately, and for a number of reasons, the very real, factual and documented issues at hand are not known amongst the general population. As such, many people hold unsustainable opinions and draw hasty conclusions on the matter.

The core of the problem is Zionism.

Again, due to a general lack of knowledge, Zionism is confused with Judaism which leads to even greater problems in perceiving the issue.

You might be surprised if I told you there were Orthodox Jews who fiercely oppose the state of ‘Israel’. There are also non-religious Jews (Jews by birth and ancestry), and in fact, a spectrum of people who have some association with Judaism, who oppose Israel.

If you might like to listen to some anti-Zionist Orthodox Jews such as Rabbi David Weiss (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahHIOMwEL_o). You will hear him talk of harmony between the Jews and the Palestinians in the past.

The media bias in favour of ‘Israel’, as identified by a number of creditable organisations, such as
a) Glasgow University Media Group (www.gla.ac.uk/centres/mediagroup/)
b) ‘If Americans knew’ (www.ifamericansknew.org) whose Executive Director, Alison Weir, makes an appearance in the haunting documentary ‘Occupation 101′ (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-2451908450811690589)
c) World renound and winner of numerous prestigious awards for Journalism John Pilger in his documentary ‘Palestine is still the Issue’ (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=746557429802139093
etc…
is responsible for erroneous ‘snapshot’ views of the horrific ordeal stamped upon the PAlestinians for 60++ years already.

Once you understand the crimes the Zionist state of Israyhell has done (I can give you 10 pages of such crimes and even that summary would constitute an underestimate) then you would hopefully see, that it is morally and wholly right to focus on Israel and oppose ‘Israel’.

But it is only a few, not everyone, who are ‘slamming’ Israel. In fact, it is only in recent years with the large scale and illegal bombing of Lebanon in the summer of 2006, and Gaza in winter 2008/2009, that the people are starting to find their voice.

Gaza and the Palestinians (Christians and Muslims by the way) were oppressed long long before Hamas came to power in early 2006, but Hamas is the latest diversionary excuse which buys Israel more leeway to continue its Shaoh (Holocaust) of the Palestinian people.

So lets look a bit more closely at Hamas.

Hamas was a resistance movement against Zionist crimes against Palestine and its inhabitants. It is an absolute right to resist aggression and oppression.

You said “they’re [Hamas] are the ones organizing Qassam squib fireworks rocket raids, suicide bombings, etc.”. It is not as though there is a peace loving legitimate nation called Isreal which out of the blue is being bombarded by Qassam rockets. Such a scenario is often painted and it’s inaccurate. The rockets are practically the only tools of legitimate resistance left to the Palestinians. I disagree in the way they are used, but it’s easy for me sit sit in this chair and type that. Especially when it’s not my little sister whose little body is literally pumped with bullets (Iman al-Hams) by an Israeli officers while other ‘Israeli’ soldiers simply look on. “Captain R” as the media calls him and assists in covering up his identity, is reported to have said the following: “even a three-year-old, needs to be killed”, and to add insult to death, ‘Captain R’ (a name with sickening overtones of a ‘super hero’) faced no justice for his clear act of pure evil.

Imagine sections of your family massacred, or even your whole family massacred. It’s easy to say ‘peace’ and ‘negotiate’ when it’s not our mothers in refugee camps, raped then shot and killed (Sabra and Shatila).

Who could sit back and allow their family and friends to be experience this? All this doesn’t even mention the checkpoints, the enduring poverty, the lack of medicines, water, sanitaion, and monetary grasp ‘Israel’ has over the Palestinians.

This of course leads onto suicide bombers. That doesn’t make suicide bombers legitimate nor does it excuse it (Islamicly, and in Christianity, suicide is a sin), but the rockets and suicide bombs are a measure of the utter desperation that the Palestinians feel.

I would be very hesitant to agree to “the Israeli govt cannot look weak, and they’re Jews,” because it is dominated by Zionism – a perversion of Judaism, just as flying airplanes into the WTC on Sept 11 2001 (if you believe in all that in the official narrative) would be a gross perversion of Islam. Also, the military might of Israel, often touted as the 4th most powerful army in the world, and is estimated to have about 300 nuclear warheads, is hardly a projection of weakness. It’s political process is immune to international law and Israeli politiicans never fail to project the ‘hard man’ image when it’s target are the indigenous soft flesh people of Palestine.

I put it to you that if the Palestinians responded against the Zionists according to the Judaic tennant of justice ‘and eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’ then Zionism would be dead and buried long ago.

I came across a respected analyst a few months ago (whose identiy escapes me for now) who said of the ‘justice ratio’ {my phrase not his} that the situation was in face “an eye for an eyelash!” (Avi Shlaim???).

Consequently, Newtons 3rd law (every reaction generates an equal and opposite reaction) is incorrect as the Israeli ‘reaction’ is in no way equal as again Gaza 08/09 and Lebanon 2006 adequately show.

What’s more remember, is that it’s the Palestinian resistance that give the REACTION in response to the Israeli ‘action’. (Deir Yassin to give a classic example)

In Feb 2006, Hamas won 75 (56.8%) out of 132 seats in the Palestinan legislative assembly on the back of a massive 75% turnout. This is often attributed as widespread rejection of the previous dominant party (Fatah) for failing to advance the cause of the Palestinian people. Hamas’s stated policy at the time was no recognition of the illegitimate theft of Palestine. From that point on, Hamas were under constant threat of having their popular mandate pulled from beneath them by Mahmoud Abbas (aka Abu Mazen) and Fatah, whose party had just suffered a massive defeat. Hamas’s democratic authority was not recognised.

A number of states in Europe as well as the US and Israel, nations that never tire of lecturing us about Democracy and projecting themselves as lovers of Democracy, refused to respect the Democratic choice of the Palestinian people, just like they were silent in Algeria when by mass popular support an Islamic party was set to secure political power in 1992.

Hamas actually managed to secure the release of BBC joutrnalist Alan Johnson from a criminal family loyal to Fatah in the Gaza strip, not that the BBC would thank Hamas for it’s actions or Hamas loyalists who put their own lives at risk in securing Mr Johnson’s life. An interesting interview by Johnson is HERE which he does mention an terminated past relationship between Hamas and his kidnappers.

You are right that ANY leader or party that does wrong or bad things should be dually criticised and where necessary face the appropriate sanction. Hamas is no exception. However w.r.t. to rockets fired from Gaza, It is very difficult to apportion blame on Hamas for the actions of some of the rocket launchers acting alone, and for ‘Israel’ to then dispense collective punishment which is illegal under international law upon the people of Gaza is NOT justified.

Just as it’s difficult to blame all British or American citizens for the 1953 UK/US sponsored overthrow of the Democratically elected Mossadeg in Iran or American citizens for the US sponsored coup in Chilea on 11th September 1973 (I was 11 months old) (see ‘WE’ – the stylised version of a fantastic speech by rhe amazing Arundhati Roy).

Little else to say about Fatah

“Fatah on the other hand, is in relative peace.” – It’s not Fatah’s leadership that have no money, food, Mercedes, international travel or security, but I’ll leave discussion of that for now and hopefully you’ll start to wonder exactly why Fatah is ‘peaceful’ with the entity that steals Palestinian land and massacres Palestinian people and don’t forget to examine what is happening in the West Bank (the area Fatah claims to represent) with the crippling apartheid wall.

End

Whether people are upset or not, even if they have good cause to be, I personally feel it is good that you expressed your opinion on the matter with reasons.

Life is a journy of growing (unless you’re like Iman al-Hams) and accumulation of data and knowledge, which hopefully leads to the betterment of mans predicament. Discussion is a vital step in that journey.

Sorry for all typo’s and any poor composition. My daily battery has been early empty all day.

I’ll imporove this post if necessary later, I’m far too tired now.

Thanks once more.

Thanks sir for that enlightening response. Yeah, I totally agree with you about Israeli military brutality, I’ve read some news reports here and there about them, and yup, I wouldn’t be in a position to say what should or should not be done because I have absolutely no idea what it feels like, to have my family shot and killed because that has never happened to me. However, and again, I doubt I would be in a legitimate position to say this, if “resistance is futile”-Borg saying from Star Trek, for the Palestinians, then why even bother fighting uh…(sorry, the actual word eludes me, how do you say fighting using weapons?) as in, why launch rockets into Sderot, when there is no point in doing so, and obviously doing so will ensure Israeli retaliation? Rather than building relatively useless home made Qassam rockets, why don’t they channel their resources to say, upgrading their infrastructure? Or something more productive in the long term rather than useless displays of resistance. And stop using those tunnels in…was it Rafah? to smuggle in weapons and use them solely for bringing in food, meds, etc. There obviously cannot be any smoke without the fire, thus I am rather skeptical, knowing Hamas’ stand on Israel, that absolutely NO weapons are smuggled in. Here, in the case of smuggling weapons and rocket launching, we can see a pattern emerging.

Militants launch rockets->rockets damage buildings, maybe ter-kill one or two Israelis->Israel responds (okay, maybe not an eye for an eye, more like you take my eye, I blow your head off)-> sends tanks, what-have-you into Gaza->kills a lot of innocent people while supposedly ferreting out militants->International outrage->Israel retreats->poor civilians pick up the pieces-> they get pissed at the Israelis (if they aren’t already)->they join the rocket squads->they start launching rockets and the cycle begins anew.

Food, meds smuggled in thru tunnels->some bright spark thinks “Hey! I can get ammo for my AK-47 from Egypt that way!”->Begins smuggling in weapons->Mossad gets word->tunnels bombed->no food and meds for civilians->again, international outrage->tunnels reopened/new tunnels dug->to pacify international media, food and meds smuggled in->another bright spark comes out with the same idea->repeat.

I don’t see myself as having full knowledge of the situation, but this is what I can see happening. And it, well, strikes me as rather stupid, no offense intended, that such cycles are repeated over and over again and no one learns anything from them. Then again, I have limited knowledge, so I bow to those with greater knowledge to correct me.

Now, I’m NOT an Israeli sympathist (there’s no such word in English??) or whatever, but I AM against violence being used to solve problems. Look at Mahatma Gandhi, peaceful resistance brought about an Independant India. Why, look at Malaysia. Did Tengku Abdul Rahman and the other founding fathers fight wars using guns, bombs, against the British? My point is, NOTHING good ever comes out of violence, no matter how “noble” its ideals may be.

Take Israel. It was born out of bloodshed and tears, look how they’re portrayed now, as a butcher nation. If the Palestinians resort to military aggression to take back their land, what good can come out of it? Not like they can even succeed now, practically every Israeli is a trained soldier because of their National Service system, kind of like the Persians vs Spartans in 300. They missed their chance when the 6 Arab nations (I read this a long time ago, sorry if I’m wrong) tried to kick Israel out and were defeated. Btw, 1 vs 6 isn’t that fair.

I feel that the Palestinians and the international community should get used to the fact that Israel is kinda like here to stay, I doubt they’re going to give up the land they fought for and bled for to keep just because no one really likes them. I think that Fatah has kind of like a “I don’t really like you, but you’re there, so…lets see what we can do”, something like that attitude to Israel, right? Which is what, I feel, is keeping the West Bank in relative peace. I’d say that’s like sacrificing a necessary evil for a greater good, namely keeping their people alive, rather than shot and dead in Gaza.

Anyway, got to go to school now, again, I’d like to apologize if I have offended anyone with my sentiments. And should anyone like to correct me, feel free do do so, constructive criticism is very welcome.

Well, for one, i dont think Hamas chose to fight over infrastucture just for the sake of fighting.

What will be the point of building highways, laboratories for schools, houses, factories if Israel is going to target all the infrastructure?

Israel even bombed ambulance, do u think they will leave the new highways, buildings untouched?

If Hamas did not fight back, what else can they do?
Wait untill they cant even raise they face to see their people?
That is basically what Fatah is doing.

As for our country, yes we achieved our independence over the table but, it wasnt the mindless and heartless Zionist that was ruling our country.

Israel had ignored A LOT of resolutions proposed by UN.
Can the Palestinians actually trust Israel to settle this problem over the table?
Will Israel ever be able to stick to what they said (think of all the ceasefire resolution Israel happily broke)?

What other alternatives are Palestinians left with?

Chance to have FREE bowling and FREE ice-skating experience at Sunway Pyramid this November 14th as part of the COMPLETE (http://completemalaysia.com) pro-Palestinian events.

We will pay for you to have fun. All we ask is you wear the “Boycott Israel” FREE t-shirts during the day. Sorry you have to pay for a t-shirt if you don’t already own one.
The t-shirts feature 4 brands that are connected to the horrific oppression of the Palestinian people due to some of these companies being involved with Zionism and the illegally occupied territories.

McDonald’s, L’Oreal, Nestle and Coca-Cola.

See the COMPLETE website for details and also our friends website: The Global BDS Movement (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) for further details. (Note: Currently information is being uploaded – should be there soon) http://bdsmovement.net/

Salam.
I’m joining!
I’m better in skating than bowling. =P

At least 20skaters are needed?
How many names so far?
What if i can find around 5?
Will it be too many?
I suppose there will be participations from other univ as well?
Thanks for updating this!

Great to have you on board. Farahin coming too?

The ice rink is large. They don’t do pre-bookings (unless I guess you want to book the rink exclusively – way too pricey!) A rep of COMPLETE was told to pay as a group (discounted rate) on the day.

I don’t think COMPLETE have maximum ‘paid for’ places at the ice rink because of its large size, as for minimum number of people.

I think you are the first to express an interest, and 5 is great, not too much at all!

Other University students will be taking place too. Cyberjaya U, UM, UIA, INTEC – possibly. We’ve not done much in the way of getting stu’s from Universities to commit yet.

COMPLETE won’t stop campaigning for the Palestinians until the Palestinians get justice.

Thanks for your support :)

The Orphan care place where you can get the Boycott t-shirts for a 50% discount is here on Google map.

Slm sir.
I hv around 11 students coming. =)
2 of whom have tshirt, 9 dont.
Is there still enough places?

Salam dear AkMaR.

11 people is fantastic! Thanks for the support. :)

I met Ijj’lal and Farahan yesterday (& 2 others) and they said they want to come for the ice skating. :) Do ALL 11 people want to do ice skating?

Let me know how many t-shirts of each particular size/type to bring on o bring on Nov 14th. Bring your student cards so you can get the 50% discount.

NOTE: I think they ask you to bring gloves and socks. Most likely you’ll have socks, but gloves???. My experience of ice rinks, or rather my bottoms experience of ice rinks, is that it can get a bit wet, so keep that in mind!

Yes, so far all 11 want to skate.
But another 1 or 2 might decide to join.
Yet to confirm.
I’ll email the particular later.
Is approx 15 too many?

Your claim is most peculiar… How exactly is boycotting (taking action against Israeli savagery) throwing in the towel?

Do you have another suggestion as to what individuals can do against the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians?

A quick drop-by.Im sure this is not ur first talk to be given, albeit, All d v.best in givin a spectacular speech later.
